Why Scottish salmon farmers ‘inspire Britain’

SCOTLAND’S salmon farmers are included in the London Stock Exchange’s list of inspirational businesses. Mowi Scotland, one of 38 Scottish names included, features in the £100 to £150 million group of ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’, now in its sixth edition. And Wester Ross Fisheries makes it into the £10 to £20 million category. Seafood business Aquascot, meanwhile, is listed among the £50 to £75 million enterprises. The report identifies the UK’s most dynamic and fastest growing small and medium sized firms. The publication was celebrated by the opening of the London market with Nicky Morgan, chair of the Treasury Select Committee; David Schwimmer, chief executive officer, London Stock Exchange Group; and more than 40 companies featured in the 2019 report, Insider.co.uk reported today. Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said: ‘I’m delighted that this year’s report includes a dedicated Scottish chapter. ‘It highlights the great innovative businesses emerging from Scotland, and shows that our economy is moving in the right direction – even in the face of all the uncertainties caused by Brexit.’ Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: ‘Small businesses not only generate over 50 per cent of all private sector turnover in the UK, they also account for 60 per cent of all UK private sector employment. ‘SMEs are the backbone of the UK economy and we are dedicated to supporting these high growth companies to achieve their potential. ‘I congratulate all the companies that are included in this year’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain report.’
