Thieves have stolen salmon worth at least two million Norwegian kroner – within sight of the high security surroundings of Oslo’s main airport.
In a brazen robbery, the gang took a trailer carrying salmon to a location close by, transferring the load to another trailer, believed to be a white Volvo, before driving off.
The incident took place in darkness around 8pm on Friday night. The police are now appealing for information from anyone who saw a trailer being driven away. The value of the haul is estimated at least NOK 2m (£144,000). The name of the owner has not yet been revealed.
Police believe the robbery was well planned.
“It was certainly not a random theft,” a police spokeswoman told the national broadcaster NRK. “It was both professional and planned.”
They think that the trailer was transported away from the parking lot by a tractor-trailer that does not belong to the company, and that it was placed on the side road and emptied there.
The stolen truck trailer was found on a side road not far from Gardermoen airport, so the salmon was loaded into another vehicle or a number of vehicles.
The police added: “It is emptied. We are talking about a significant load. It’s one thing to take this load, but it’s probably a big deal. So turning this around afterwards is probably the motive, and it’s not done for everyone. So I assume this is both professional and planned.”
Large scale salmon thefts are relatively rare in Norway thanks to high security at the larger airports, but this truck was outside at the guarded area at the time.
