The committee is a direct result of the recently adopted Total Preparedness Report.

The purpose of the study is to gain more comprehensive knowledge about the Norwegian food system, identify opportunities, challenges and dilemmas, and make recommendations for measures that can strengthen the sustainability of the Norwegian food system.

It will also contribute to making the global food system more sustainable.

Bente Torstensen said: “We are facing complex challenges where food security, climate change and global food production are closely intertwined.

“With a solid foundation in both seafood and food from agriculture at Nofima, I look forward to contributing knowledge about concrete solutions to strengthen Norwegian food preparedness.”

Nofima has been developing innovative solutions for the food systems of the future within the blue and green sectors.

Examples include more sustainable feed and food, technology for better utilisation of residual raw materials, and preserving food by ensuring that it is safe and keeps as long as possible.

Bente Torstensen is also involved internationally in work on global food systems. She pointed out: “Climate change is affecting food production and making it more vulnerable. At the same time, as much as a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from food production.

"We throw away a third of all food produced in the world. At the same time, many people are hungry. In addition, biodiversity is under pressure. To solve these problems, we need to understand food systems – locally, nationally and globally.”

The committee will deliver its recommendations on a more holistic and sustainable food system by June next year.
