Mowi and SalMar among world's leading sustainable businesses

Two Atlantic salmon farming giants, Mowi and SalMar, have been named by TIME Magazine and the German data and analysis company Statista as being among the world’s most sustainable companies this year. The sponsors say it is one thing for companies to give lip service on helping the environment, it is another thing for its leaders to make public commitments that are trackable and help to improve the planet. Both Mowi and SalMar have yet to comment formally on their success but they are reported to be delighted at the news. The awards should also help to counter some of the environmental criticism that has been levelled against salmon farming businesses of late. Mowi is certainly no stranger to environmental accolades. For five years in a row it has been ranked by the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index as the most sustainable animal protein producer. And earlier this year SalMar launched its environmentally driven salmon “Living Lab” initiative. TIME and Statista say that for the first time they have created a rigorous methodology with which to measure the world’s most sustainable companies for this year and are holding companies to high targets. They add: “The companies at the top of the list have signed on to some of the most respected climate programmes, including the 1.5°C target from the Science Based Targets initiative and receive high scores from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). “And, perhaps most importantly, many of the top companies have incorporated sustainability into their business models.”
