How Kvarøy Arctic Seafarms' Nesna plant will look

The Norwegian arm of the global technology company ABB has won the contract for what will be one of Norway’s largest land-based salmon farm facilities.

Kvarøy Arctic Seafarm, plans to build a NOK 2.7 billion (£192m) facility in Nesna municipality in Nordland, in collaboration with Total Betong and Eyvi, a global leader in land based RAS technology.

ABB said it will deliver automation to the site, including control rooms, instrumentation, electrical panels and frequency converters. In addition, there will be lighting control in the growth tanks. ABB will also be responsible for electrical and instrument installation, which will be carried out by its consortium partner, Fokus Elektro AS.

The operation is a flow-through facility where water from the sea goes through it before being cleaned and returned.

This, says ABB, provides for more environmental salmon production, while also protecting against sea lice, preventing escapes and providing better fish welfare.

Eyvi project manager Vegard Wigstøl said: “Water quality affects both growth and health, and it is important that this is monitored and adjusted automatically in a safe manner.

“Operators must have a complete overview of the status of the facility at all times, be able to operate and make adjustments to control parameters from the control system for the best possible conditions for growth and health. We are confident that ABB’s solution will ensure good fish welfare, which is a key priority in all our projects.”

The flow-through facility will be built in two modules, with module two only going ahead after module one has been completed and put into production.

According to the schedule, the facility can be in full production with both modules in 2027. The first construction phase will facilitate the production of 10,000 tonnes of salmon per year and will provide 40 new jobs.

The facility is to be ready for full production in the autumn of 2027. The first smolt will be released into the facility next year.

When the facility is fully developed, it will provide work for up to 100 people at Nesna.

The high-tech salmon farm has been designed to be energy efficient, and will be equipped with solar cells for the production of clean energy.
