Great Northern Salmon, the company looking to develop a land-based fish farm in Millinocket, Maine, has entered a strategic partnership with recirculating aquaculture systems specialist Eyvi to develop projects in the United States.
In a joint statement, the two companies said: “Eyvi has been working to establish a position for expansion into the US, while Great Northern Salmon has worked to strengthen its position with partners and investors with deep land-based expertise. The strategic synergies between the parties here became obvious in dialogues throughout this winter.”
Great Northern Salmon (GNS), Eyvi, and Eyvi’s owners have entered into agreements for collaboration on US development for salmon and trout, with Eyvi serving as Great Northern Salmon’s RAS vendor. Additionally, Eyvi’s owners are making a significant strategic investment in GNS.
Eyvi designed and built the successful Hima RAS facility in Norway, which is the world’s largest land-based trout farm. The Hima project is progressing well, Eyvi says, and has experienced no significant production incidents. The first commercial harvest at Hima is scheduled for this summer as planned.
Eyvi has also designed and is currently building a facility for Arctic Seafarm in Norway, with a phase 1 build-out of 8,000 mt. Like GNS, the Eyvi team has extensive experience from numerous RAS facilities over the years, including large-scale operations.
GNS, originally known as Katahdin Salmon, is looking to build the first recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in the US state of Maine, says it is about to start work on preparing the ground at its construction site. GNS is building a facility with capacity for 10,000 tonnes of salmon annually, at a former industrial site in Millinocket.
Marianne Naess, CEO of Great Northern Salmon, said: “We are impressed by the experience and design thinking at Eyvi. Equally important are the synergies we have identified from collaborating on US aquaculture development, and strategic investment from some of Eyvi’s owners into Great Northern Salmon.”
Heidi Kyvik, Chief Business Development Officer with Eyvi, said: “The attention to detail in harnessing the full potential of RAS salmon production and understanding the US market at Great Northern Salmon has impressed us. We see that we have much to offer each other as we develop our regenerative production strategies for trout and salmon in the US market.”
