The Cooke Seafood group has received European Union certification for its Chilean organic salmon.
Cooke, which is already a major producer of organic salmon in Scotland, described the move as a milestone setting new standards for salmon production in the country.
The accreditation will guarantee that salmon farming is carried out in compliance with European Union (EU) organic production standards.
Cooke said: “The certification was achieved after a lengthy process, which involved additional efforts throughout the entire production chain.
“This is because organic production reflects a comprehensive aquaculture and food production management system that combines the best environmental and farming practices, a high level of biodiversity, the conservation of natural resources, and the application of strict animal welfare and production safety standards.”
The company added: “This milestone not only represents a new standard for salmon production in Chile, with a method that is more environmentally friendly and healthier for consumers, but also symbolizes our country’s entry into the international organic salmon market, considered by many to be a fundamental part of the food solution of the future.”
Cooke said that among the main standards required by the European Union (EU), the following stand out:
Cooke announced last year that its Chilean organic salmon, marketed under the brand name Shima, would be aimed primarily at the EU and UK markets. At the time the company said it planned to produce 3,200 tonnes, representing a quarter of its total output in Chile.
