Salmon farming company Bakkafrost has agreed to continue its sponsorship of the Faroese men’s national football team.
Bakkafrost has not given a financial figure but said the support will continue for the next four years.
Bakkafrost has been a long-term supporter of the Faroese national team, which is seen as one of the minnows in international soccer although it occasionally springs surprises.
However, the choice of players is very limited as the population of the Faroe Islands is only 57,000, the size of a town like Weymouth in the UK.
Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jacobsen said: “We see great value in the Faroese national football team, which we also believe is an excellent representative for the Faroe Islands. Therefore, we wish to continue the good collaboration that has existed between the parties since 2012."
The Faroese Football Association (FSF) said it was delighted with the new agreement with Bakkafrost.
The national team president Christian Andreasen replied: “Bakkafrost is among the world’s leading aquaculture companies, headquartered in the Faroe Islands, and it is gratifying that a company like Bakkafrost sees development potential in the men’s national team while also wishing to support the tremendous work being done on and around the team.”
The Faroese men’s national team will soon begin preparations for the qualification matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
They face a tough qualifying campaign as they are placed in Group L, which includes twice World Cup winner France. Other formidable opponents are Croatia and the Czech Republic, although they have easier opponents in Gibraltar and Montenegro.
The first match will be played on Saturday, 22 March, away against the Czech Republic.
