A young diver has died in an accident along the central coast of Norway yesterday afternoon.
He was employed by the KB Group which is mainly involved with supporting fish farming operations.
It has not been confirmed whether he was on an aquaculture related work at the time but it was stated that he was on a routine diving mission. His body was retrieved from the water by work colleagues.
Police reported that at around 2.40pm (Norwegian time) a man in his 20s was retrieved from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene. His family was informed and he was later named as Vegard Reiersgård Dalen, a professional diver aged 25. He was working on a diving boat with a number of colleagues when the accident happened.
Local news media say that CPR was administered at the scene without success.
KB Group (KB-Gruppen in Norwegian) is located in Rørvik in Nærøysund municipality. It offers maritime services mainly to the aquaculture industry, and earlier this year was acquired by aquaculture technology and services group Smir as part of its investment in submersible cages.
KB Group said: “This is a deeply tragic event, which affects all of us hard. Our thoughts go first and foremost to the next of kin.
“At the same time, we are now focusing on looking after our around 60 employees, who have tragically lost a colleague and friend.”
The company says on its website that it has the equipment needed to carry out a number of tasks underwater. With a pressure chamber available, it can dive to a depth of 50 metres and ensure that the work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner. It also has mobile diving equipment so that it can take on assignments where a boat is not a suitable means of access.
