Cardiomyopathy generally refers to diseases of the heart muscle, where the walls of the heart chambers have become stretched, thickened or stiff.

Specifically, Cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) is an disease affecting adult Atlantic salmon in sea water. According to the Scottish Government the first confirmed outbreaks were reported from coastal sites in Norway in the mid 1980s, but it is now reported from most fish farming areas in Norway. The first case in Scotland was reported in 2000 and subsequently from fish from the Faeroe Islands, Denmark.

The disease is transmittable and is linked to viral infection. Affected fish often show few clinical signs before death, but behavioural changes such as sluggish movement and a reluctance to feed can give clues.
