AQUACULTURE leaders from across the world gathered in Stavanger last night for the start of the biennial AquaVision conference, held over two days in the city.
Almost 450 participants from 45 countries – including a 45-strong delegation from Chile and a sizeable Antipodean group – will hear today from keynote speaker Ban-Ki moon, secretary-general of the United Nations from 2007 to 2016.
And tomorrow, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will address the conference, being held at the Stavanger Concert Hall, on the subject of ‘The Ocean Challenge and SeaBos’, an initiative to save the oceans.
Other speakers include economist Ragnar Tveteras; Jose Antonio Camposano, executive president of the National Chamber of Aquaculture in Ecuador; conference organiser Skretting’s Viggo Halseth; and Gareth Johnstone, director general of Worldfish.
Therese Log Bergjord, managing director of Skretting Global Salmon and Fish Feed Southern Europe, welcoming guests at the opening reception, said : ‘We will look beyond tomorrow to see if we are ready for the step change we believe will come through collaboration and innovation in the industry.
‘These are crazy times we are living in and we will have to step up if we want to lead because if we do not lead we’ll be led.’
