Smoked salmon products in awards shortlist

Shortlisted for Scotland Food & Drink awards 2024

Two leading salmon smokehouses have been recognised in the shortlist for the 23rd Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards.

St James Smokehouse (Scotland) has been shortlisted in the Fish & Seafood category for its 200g Royal Fillet product.

Selected from the finest Scottish or Atlantic fillets, each piece is hand-cured with a blend of pure sea salt and brown sugar before being traditionally smoked over oak chips for an exquisite flavour.

The company says of its product: “This premium salmon is steeped in centuries-old tradition.”

Also shortlisted in this category is Lagg Whisky Cured Smoked Salmon from the Isle of Bute Smokehouse.

Isle of Bute Smokehouse says the product is the result of a “common dream” shared with the distillers of Lagg whisky, based on the Isle of Arran: “To create a new smoked salmon product that would combine the best of both islands; the sweet smoky flavour of Lagg whisky with the delicate buttery flavour of Bute salmon.”

The smokehouses are up against fellow entrants Thistle Seafoods (M&S Our Best Ever Fish Pie) and WEECOOK Fishwife Pie.

In total, the shortlist for all categories includes 46 food and drink producers. In total, 179 entries were submitted across the 14 product categories.

Taking place on 9 October in Glasgow, the Excellence Awards are part of the wider Excellence Summit—a powerhouse event that merges Scotland Food & Drink’s annual industry conference with the coveted awards ceremony. The headline sponsor is the retail chain Asda.

Iain Baxter, Chief Executive of Scotland Food & Drink, said: “The Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards celebrate Scotland’s outstanding products and the remarkable businesses behind them. Whether a brand-new start-up or an established industry leader, these awards are a testament to the hard work and passion that drives our sector forward. Congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted—we look forward to sharing a night of celebration and some of Scotland’s finest produce.”
