Translucent Post-Larval Disease (TPD) is a significant and emerging threat in shrimp aquaculture. First identified in southern China in 2020 before spreading rapidly, TPD primarily affects the post-larval stages of Penaeus vannamei. The disease is characterised by a translucent appearance, empty gastrointestinal tract and high mortality rates that can reach 90% within days of onset. The causative pathogen responsible for TPD was identified to be a hypervirulent, new strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VpTPD).

TPD poses a serious threat to shrimp farmers striving to maintain healthy stocks and sustainable production. As an industry we are yet to fully understand TPD and the prevalence of VpTPD but measures can be taken to manage the risk from an infectious outbreak. Prevention requires an integrated approach including water quality management, robust biosecurity measures and a balanced nutritional plan to support the shrimp’s immune system, including the use of functional feed ingredients such as phytogenic essential oils.

To help support in the fight against TPD, feed additive manufacturer Anpario has conducted research with Nong Lam University in Vietnam, to assess the in-vitro inhibitory effect of their functional feed ingredients to VpTPD. The trial demonstrated Orego-Stim© Forte, made from 100% natural oregano essential oils and quillaja extract, had a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against VpTPD of <4000ppm and a minimum bactericidal concentration of 8000ppm. This independent study would suggest that Orego-Stim© Forte could help support against TPD caused by VpTPD.
