THREE students from the University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture were awarded prizes for posters displayed at this week’s Fish Vet Society conference, held near Edinburgh.
Chiara Bosco won first prize for her work, and was presented with a copy of ‘Cleaner Fish Biology and Aquaculture Applications’, sponsored by publisher 5m.
Elizabeth Leuchte and Kerryn Illes received special mention for their posters, which focused, respectively, on environmental remediation and the elimination of hepatic neoplasia in winter flounder residing in Boston Harbour, and hypoxia and environmental management in the Murray Darling Basin in Australia.
The conference, held at Houstoun House hotel in Uphall on Tuesday and Wednesday, attracted around 75 delegates and featured sessions on antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic usage, vaccination and preventive strategies, and training and education.
The keynote address was given by Julie Hesketh-Laird, chief executive of the SSPO (Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation), who revealed a 47 per cent reduction in the salmon industry’s spending on sea lice medicines over the past three years.
A report on the conference will appear in the April issue of Fish Farmer.
