Norwegian seafood exports hit July record

Norwegian seafood exports hit a new record last month, totalling  159,000 tonnes with a value of  7.1 billion kroners. The July volume was up by eight per cent and the value seven per cent higher. Once again salmon was king, earning  NOK 5.3 billion, more than two thirds of the total seafood revenue. So far this year, Norway has exported 1.6 million tonnes of seafood worth NOK 55.2 billion.
The Norwegian Seafood Council  is clearly delighted with the results because normally July is the weakest month of the year for exports, but this time  aquaculture exports in particular hit a new record.

Paul T. Aandahl, seafood analyst at the  Council,  said salmon sales continued to grow last month and continuing high prices helped to make it a  record month. However, the average  July price per kilo  was NOK  56.45 compared with NOK 64.11  this time last year.
The July volume for salmon was 88,000 tons, an increase of 20 per cent or 15,000 tons. The value at NOK 5.3 billion rose by seven per cent or NOK 344 million. Salmon exports for the first seven months of 2018 have reached 572,000 tons with a value of NOK 37.8 billion, the volume up by nine per cent and value up by four per cent on the same period last year. Poland and France remain the largest overseas markets.
The July value of farmed trout exports increased by 28 per cent and was worth a total of NOK 213 million. Export volumes totalled 3,350 tons, a rise of 65 per cent. The good news is that both volumes and revenue from trout sales  for the year so far are higher than the same period in 2017, with the United States emerging as one of the most important markets.
