Stirling seeks new head of aquaculture

THE world renowned Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University is looking for a new head, who will lead it through the major redevelopment of its facilities.
The professorial appointment comes at an exciting time, said the IoA in its job advertisement, with the recently announced City Deal, which includes £17 million government funding to build a new Institute of Aquaculture and Food Security.
The successful candidate will have an internationally recognised academic record, as well as a commitment to animal care and welfare.
More than 80 per cent of research outputs at the IoA were judged to be world leading or internationally excellent by a Research Excellence Framework in 2014, and 90 per cent of the impact was found to be world leading.
The advertised role is described as a ‘sensational opportunity for a strong academic leader’ to guide the IoA, which was established in 1971, on the next stage of its journey.
The new head will lead the institute in all aspects of academic endeavour, including research, innovation, learning and teaching, animal care and international activities, and will represent the IoA outside the university, both nationally and internationally.
‘We aim to attract a colleague of international standing who will provide leadership in innovative research, knowledge exchange, curriculum development and strategic performance management,’ said the IoA.
The most recent director was Professor Herve Migaud, the current Chair in Fish Breeding and Stock Management at Stirling.
In a recent publication highlighting all the latest research, Migaud wrote of the IoA: ‘As a catalyst for innovation and enterprise, it provides a global hub for the creation of sustained research partnerships across the aquaculture community.’
